Sacrifice to the deity Mars named Suovetaurilia
1812-1825
Brown ink on paper, 6.69 x 9.44 inch
This drawing can be attributed to the painter and academic Francesco Nenci by connecting it with the works he made in Rome during the years 1812-1814 dedicated to antique and Roman history.
The subject is the suovetaurilia, a ritual sacrifice of a pig, a ram and a bull propitiatory for the harvesting of ancient origin, it is indeed mentioned also in the Odyssey by Homer.
