Caino owerwhelmed by the thought of the fratricide
GIUSEPPE GIORDANELLO
Only little is known regarding this intriguing painter of Romantic culture active in the Piedmont region in the second half of the 19th century. […] In 1846, together with an unidentified Resting Vulcan, he exhibited at the Promotrice delle Belle Arti the painting here studied with the title: Cain overwhelmed by the thought of fratricide. The work addressed a very popular theme in the Italian artistic environment and in the halls of the Fine Arts Academy during the Romanticism years. The subject, indeed, allowed the artist to deal with a typology considered elevated in the academic culture, namely that of the heroic nude. The theme also permitted them to confront themselves with the difficult challenge of rendering, linked with contemporary theatrical performances, of feelings as dramatic, powerful, and dark as rage, madness, remorse.
